I love photographing kids. Kids are amazing little people full of energy and life and a true sense of the freedom that comes by living in the moment. When I think back to my own childhood memories, I remember running through the woods and swimming in the many lakes of Simcoe County and Muskoka. Earlier this summer I had an idea for a fine art portrait series at the lake. My vision was to create a fine art portrait series that captured a feeling of the fleeting innocence of childhood, the pure joy of play and the calmness that the water brings to our souls and our being. I had decided to photograph in black and white with the idea that it would evoke a sense of nostalgia in the images. However, as the sun was setting, the beautiful light intensified the vivid colours of the water and the sky, and so a few of the colour images are included in this fine art portrait series.

It was a beautiful summer evening and we went to the lake to create some fine art portraits. The girls hung out, chatted and laughed together while taking in all the natural beauty surrounding them. They walked and ran through the woods while I quietly observed and captured this time spent together.

Our memories fade as time passes. It is important to document our families and our lives not only for ourselves but for our kids and for their children. I have shared many posts on my blog about the importance of family portraiture and how critical it is to document your family’s history.

With documentary and fine art portraiture, we can capture the fleeting moments of childhood and the richness of our everyday life found in those ‘in-between’ moments that make our life’s story. I am excited to share this fine art portrait session with you today. I am now offering fine art and documentary portrait sessions through my studio. Information about these sessions will be available shortly.

The lake…oh to be near the water. I have always loved living near water. Being near water can give us a sense of calmness and clarity and can connect us with our soul. The lake is both peaceful and rejuvenating. There is nothing quite like being at the lake. At the lake we remember ourselves.

“A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.” – Henry David Thoreau
